AGATE State Curriculum Award
Cathy Crouch received a 2009 First Place Curriculum Award at the State AGATE (Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education) for her Elementary Gifted/Talented Curriculum called Working for Wheels...Rolling with Pride. This was designed as a character education and philanthropy leadership project for the GT students of John Tyson Elementary. Her students were leaders in their campaign to work and earn money to donate to the International Wheelchair Foundation. This award was for the GT lessons she created which highlighted the GT process skills of Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Independent Study, Communication through presentations to the school and community, and the Affective Development of her students.

In three years, the Tyson students have been able to raise over $20,000 (266 wheelchairs) and are in to their fourth year of this Global project to give hope, mobility, and freedom to those in need. Most exciting for Cathy is that this year, her 5th grade student Luke Hannon will be accompanying her and the Rotary Club to the International Wheelchair distribution in Mexico in April! Luke has been a GT leader in this project for three years, and will be traveling with his grandparents from the Mountain Home Rotary Club.
